Oil, propane & electric to gas

Get rid of the oil tank. Heat with gas.

Oil, propane and electric to gas conversions across Ottawa · Nepean · Kanata · Stittsville · Barrhaven · Orleans · Gloucester · Manotick · Greely · Richmond · Carp · Kemptville · Rockland — from our shop at 36 Capital Drive, Nepean.

Natural gas is usually the cheapest way to heat a house in Ottawa, and a high-efficiency gas furnace burns a fraction of what an old oil furnace does. We handle the whole conversion — paperwork, piping, furnace, water heater and start-up.

The process

What a conversion actually involves.

  1. Enbridge application

We file for your new gas service and coordinate the service line from the street to a meter on your house.

  2. Gas piping

We run new piping from the meter to the furnace room and to any other appliances you want on gas at the same time.

  3. Furnace & water heater

A high-efficiency gas furnace and, usually, a gas water heater go in together. Reid Heating & Cooling handles the HVAC side under the same roof.

  4. Start-up & tank removal

We fire everything up, test it, tag it, and arrange removal of the old oil tank.

Why Ottawa homes keep switching

Heating with oil or electricity here can cost several times what natural gas does over a winter, and propane sits in between with a tank and a delivery truck to manage. A gas furnace runs at 95% or better efficiency, needs no fuel deliveries, and the same service can feed a water heater, range, dryer, fireplace and BBQ.

There is also the tank itself. Oil tanks age, insurers ask about them, and a leak means an expensive clean-up. Taking it out removes that risk for good.

Common questions

How much does a gas furnace cost?

It depends on the size of the house and the efficiency and features you choose. We quote the furnace, water heater and gas piping together so you see the whole number up front.

What does Enbridge charge to bring gas to the house?

Enbridge sets its own charge for the service line from the road to your meter, which varies with distance and current programs. We’ll walk you through the application and what to expect.

What else should I convert at the same time?

The water heater, almost always — it’s the second-biggest energy user in the house. Many customers add a range, dryer or BBQ line while the crew is already there.

How long does a conversion take?

Our part is usually a day or two. The overall timeline depends on Enbridge scheduling the service line, so the earlier in the season you start, the better.

Can you convert from propane or electric?

Yes. Propane conversions often reuse the appliances with a conversion kit; electric conversions get a new gas furnace and water heater.

Who removes the oil tank?

We arrange it with a licensed tank removal contractor as part of the job.

Thinking about converting before winter?

Start the Enbridge application early — the service line is usually the longest part of the wait.
